Dyslexikits are for home or school use. They are designed for parents and teachers to use with children who are struggling with reading spelling and handwriting. All children learning literacy skills, however, will benefit from the content. Aimed at 5-11 year olds, Dyslexikits are designed in book format and use exercises, games and activities to develop the skills that underpin literacy using a structured building-block approach.
There are 20 Dyslexikits. 1-10 are available individually.
11-15 Are now available in one volume.
16-20 Are now available in one volume.
Dyslexikit 1 is the first book from the Dyslexikit literacy programme and introduces the basic routines and worksheet structures used in every Dyslexikit. The user will learn about the Reading Card routine, the Spelling Card routine and the Reading Worksheet routine. There is also instruction and a rationale concerning handwriting. The single letters t, i, and p are covered in Dyslexikit 1 including reading, spelling and writing words using these letters. Long and short vowel sounds are described here and are used throughout the Dyslexikit series. The particular letter and skill order, and the cumulative nature of the programme is deliberate, so that words and sentences can be built quickly but systematically. Detailed instructions accompany every lively, full-colour worksheet, game or activity.
Two single letters and three consonant blends are introduced in Dyslexikit 2 - n, s, sn, sp and st. There is an emphasis on listening for single letter sounds as well as rimes. Using only the letters learned so far, handwriting and reading words and sentences are included.
Dyslexikit 3 introduces a second vowel - a - and two other letters - d and c. Reading, spelling and handwriting are covered using only the letters taught so far in the series. There is advice on b/d confusion. More listening activities are included.
A third vowel, two other letters and four blends are introduced in Dyslexikit 4 - o, h, r, tr, pr, dr and cr. These are tackled individually and with the other letters used so far in the Dyslexikit series in reading, spelling and handwriting activities and games. There is emphasis on a little-and-often approach stressing the importance of review, practice and praise.
A fourth vowel, three other letters and four more blends are introduced in Dyslexikit 5 - e, m, b and l-blends. Onset and rime are emphasised as a strategy for reading. Capital letters and punctuation are discussed. Again, letters and skills learnt in previous Dyslexikits are incorporated.
Dyslexikit 6 begins work on syllables. Syllable knowledge is taught as a strategy for reading and spelling. Using only letters and blends covered so far, the carefully structured activities and games teach open and closed syllables and the first syllable division pattern - VC/CV (vowel, consonant / consonant, vowel).
Suffixes are taught in the Dyslexikit programme to use in strategies for reading and spelling. The first two suffixes are included in Dyslexikit 7 - s and ed. Pupils learn what suffixes are, why they are important and how to recognise them. The concept of vowel and consonant suffixes is introduced and pupils learn how suffix knowledge supports reading and spelling. Some terminology, such as noun, verb and plural, is introduced
A new rule concerning double letters at the end of words is established in Dyslexikit 8. Double-l and double-s are covered. Activities and games maintain the reading, spelling and handwriting skills and strategies learned so far in the series including long and short vowels, onset and rime, and suffix strategies. There is an introduction to comprehension work.
Three further suffixes are included in Dyslexikit 9 - es, less and ness. The syllable division pattern VC/CV is reviewed. Previously learned skills and strategies are consolidated through games and activity worksheets.
Two single letters and four more blends are introduced - f, g, fr, fl, gr and gl. Basic reading, spelling and handwriting routines continue. Terminology and word division strategies are reviewed.
VC/CV is reviewed and a new syllable division pattern - V/CV is introduced.
The last true vowel - u is introduced, as well as k, ck and th. Pupils learn how to make the spelling choice between c, k and ck.
Four new letters - y, j, v and w are introduced as well as the letter groups sh, qu, squ, squa, wa and war.
The syllable division pattern V/V is covered; syllables, suffixes and punctuation are reviewed.
The reading and spelling routines are maintained and handwriting is further developed.
The final two single letters are taught - x and z. The double-s and double-l rule is reviewed and double-z and double-f introduced.
Suffixes learned so far are reviewed before the 'doubling' rule for adding vowel suffixes is taught.
Other letter groups covered are ar, or and ch.
Some further spelling choices are taught - ee, y, i-e, a-e, ay.
Also included are the suffixes y, ly and ty.
The reading and spelling routines are maintained and handwriting is further developed.
Skills and strategies from previous Dyslexikits are constantly reviewed.
